As a result, wireless communications are potentially more sensitive to interference. Modern protocols include highly advanced mechanisms to detect and mitigate it, so in most situations this does not represent a real problem. However, in especially congested environments or in the presence of a radio jammer, communication loss or service degradation may occur.
From a technological perspective, wireless protocols are considerably more complex. They require specialized radio-frequency hardware and more advanced software stacks, which increases the likelihood of errors and means manufacturers need to publish updates more frequently to fix bugs or improve performance.
Security also depends heavily on the cryptographic mechanisms used. If an encryption protocol becomes obsolete or is compromised, an attacker could attempt to access the network even from outside the home. For this reason, wireless technologies are constantly evolving and need to be kept up to date.
This rapid evolution also affects device lifespan. Even if a device continues to perform its function correctly, there may come a point when replacing it is advisable in order to meet more modern security standards.
In terms of cost, the opposite usually happens compared to wired systems. Although the internal technology is more complex, the transmission medium itself is free and does not require deploying physical infrastructure. In addition, wireless devices do not need components such as connectors, isolation transformers, filters, or specific protection circuits, which helps reduce the overall cost of the devices.
